Friday 26th May – Sailing (Dart 18) – Felixstowe cruise – sunny

Looking forward for several days the forecast afternoon breeze but as usual it failed to materialise:( Mag and I were walking to the seafront when we saw windsurfing friend Mark Smalling heading to The Dip so on returning home I hitched up the trailer and we headed down just in time to see Mark driving off home as the wind was very light!
We were enjoying s cuppa in the van when Mark Swain turned up after taking the afternoon off and suggested a trip along the coast in his Dart 18 as too light to windsurf. So, I put my wetsuit on while Mark returned home to pick up the sails. It was then a short drive to Felixstowe Ferry to set up the boat. Launching was challenging with the wind light and the outgoing tide very strong taking you straight onto the jetty. It took a couple of attempts to clear the jetty as Marks crew, me is a crap boat sailor. Then on the way out to sea along the Deben we had to take quick action to avoid running aground on a shingle bank, the river is now very narrow. Safely out to sea we broad reached all the way to the River Orwell in a lumpy sea with the winds a bit on the light side.
The beat back was more fun even if a little wet as we hit the waves head on.
There was someone rigging a windsurfer at The Dip and some kitesurfers setting up too. It was good heading over the bumpy water on the Deben bar and we could just make against the tide on the way to the Ferry. The wind always goes light on the corner where you have to land but we made it back safely after three hours out covering 14n/miles, a top afternoon on the water and many thanks to Mark for taking me:)
It might be possible to windsurf early tomorrow, will check and fingers crossed!
